The Couples Diary · 90 days of closeness, on purpose

The smartest work on a relationship happens before it goes wrong. The Couples Diary is your 90 days.

You have the will, the love, and each other. There's only one thing missing - a way to turn „we want to" into „we do this every day." The Couples Diary turns that intention into a 90-day ritual: ten minutes a day, an attachment-style assessment, 100 conversations before you commit - all built on the research of Gottman, Aron, and Pennebaker.

Built on peer-reviewed research (Gottman · Aron · Pennebaker) · Look inside before you buy · Kindle & Paperback on Amazon

The Couples Diary - cover

Built into the book - the research we stand on

Gottman

The 5:1 ratio - five positive interactions for every negative one.

Aron

Self-expansion. Closeness through shared novelty.

Pennebaker

Expressive writing. 3 days × 20 minutes.

Clear

A 10-minute ritual beats an hour once a week.

You're starting from strength

The hardest part is already behind you.

Most couples only start working on their relationship once something is already cracking. You're here while it's still good - which means you've noticed something most people miss until it's too late. That isn't a small thing. It's the whole difference. The only thing you're missing is a tool that turns that awareness into a daily ritual.

Because closeness doesn't disappear with a bang. Quietly, work, home, kids, and the calendar turn „who are we to each other" into „who's taking out the trash." It doesn't mean something's wrong with you - it only means no one ever taught you how to build closeness on purpose, while life is still good.

  • „We're together. And inside, I feel alone."
  • „We only talk about what needs to get done."
  • „Something's fraying, but I can't point to where."
  • „We're getting married with our ideas of each other - not the real person."
  • „We want to work on us - but therapy feels like too much."

This is a diary for couples who are aware. Not broken.

What's inside

One book. Three tools. Ninety days.

The Couples Diary isn't an ebook you read. It's a book you fill in - together, every day, about ten minutes at a time. Inside is everything you need to turn „we're doing okay" into „we know where we're going."

01

Attachment-style assessment

A separate diagnostic for each of you. 30 questions, 1-5 scale. You'll learn how each of you loves, defends, reaches out, and pulls away.

02

Relationship Map - point zero

Your baseline: where you are today. You'll repeat the exact same exercise after 90 days. A before/after in your own words.

03

The 90-day daily ritual

Ten minutes a day: „Today I appreciate you for..." + Question of the Day (separately) + Together + a quote + a mission. Each month goes deeper.

04

The bank of 90 missions

Experiments grounded in Arthur Aron's research - shared novel experiences expand the self and build closeness. 90 missions, one a day.

05

100 conversations before you commit

A built-in supplement: 10 domains (money, kids, boundaries, sex, family, career, values, crisis, death, the everyday) - 100 questions to ask before you say „I do."

06

Repair Pages + Return Pages

For the hard days. Six repair paths after a fight. Four return paths for when you stop writing. Anti-churn built into the product.

Three products in one book: a journal · a diagnostic · a compatibility compass.

The architecture of 90 days

Three months. Three stages. One decision.

The work is sequenced the way Gottman-method therapists run it - from foundation, through communication, to gratitude. Each month goes deeper.

Diagnostic
Month 1
Month 2
Month 3
The Big Review

Diagnostic (before day 1)

Attachment-style assessment (separately) · Relationship Map · Love Languages · Vision & Values · A Celebration System · Letters to open after 90 days.

Month 1 - Foundation (who we are)

30 days of rediscovering each other. The daily ritual - core questions, facts, history. Depth escalates in the second half of the month.

Month 2 - Communication & closeness

30 days of working on how you talk. The daily ritual - questions about emotions, fears, needs. Missions that stretch past comfort. The first Repair Page sessions (if needed).

Month 3 - Gratitude & the decision

30 days of completing the transformation. The daily ritual - the deepest questions, dreams, plans. Return to the Relationship Map from point zero.

The Big Review (day 90)

A shared conversation about what changed. Reading the letters you wrote during the Diagnostic. The decision: where do we go from here.

See exactly what you're getting

This isn't a notebook with questions. It's a 90-day method - look inside.

You should know precisely what you're buying before you click. Most „couples journals" are loose prompts you skip around. This is a sequenced program - order matters, and you can see it.

The most common worry in this category

„What if my partner won't want to?"

The first step is almost always taken by one person - the one who noticed first that the conversations have turned into logistics. If that's you: you don't need your partner's sign-off before you buy. You need a good first evening. Three rules:

1 · Show it, don't announce it.

Instead of „we need to work on our relationship" (sounds like a diagnosis) - put the book on the table and say: „Ten minutes, you and me, tonight. The first page is a light one. Try it?"

2 · The first evening is a date, not an audit.

Day 1 is deliberately warm: one appreciation and one simple question. No hard topics up front - the depth builds gradually, only once you're both ready.

3 · Separately first, then together.

You each write on your own first, then read to each other. Nobody improvises „live," nobody is put on the spot. For a partner who's „not the journaling type," this is the lowest possible bar to entry.

Honestly: if your partner firmly doesn't want to - this isn't the moment for this book. But between „doesn't want to" and „doesn't know yet that they want to," there's one shared evening. That's where it starts.

Not from intuition. From research.

Five studies The Couples Diary stands on.

Every exercise, every mission, every question has a basis in published research. We don't make it up. We translate the science of relationships into a daily ritual you can actually keep.

The Gottman Institute - the 5:1 ratio

Couples who last maintain five positive interactions for every negative one. John Gottman described this pattern after 30 years of observing couples in his „Love Lab." And 69% of conflicts in long relationships are perpetual - the point isn't to eliminate them, it's how you talk about them.

Gottman, J. & Silver, N. (1999). The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.

Arthur Aron - self-expansion

Shared novel experiences expand the sense of self and build deeper closeness. Aron's famous „36 Questions" showed that structured conversation can create intimacy between strangers in 45 minutes. We built that mechanism into the bank of 90 missions.

Aron, A. et al. (1997). The Experimental Generation of Interpersonal Closeness.

James Pennebaker - expressive writing

Three days × twenty minutes of writing about the emotions tied to a hard experience improves relationship survival and mental health. Built into the Repair Pages and Return Pages.

Slatcher, R.B. & Pennebaker, J.W. (2006). How Do I Love Thee?

James Clear - atomic habits

Consistency beats intensity. Ten minutes a day, held for 90 days, is 15 hours of work on your relationship. One therapy session is 50 minutes once a week. The math favors the ritual.

Clear, J. (2018). Atomic Habits.

PREPARE/ENRICH + Kansas State (4,574 couples, 25 years)

The largest longitudinal study of couples on record found that arguments about money are the single strongest predictor of divorce - stronger than conflict over sex, kids, or in-laws. That's why the „100 conversations" supplement opens with money.

Olson, D.H. (2008). PREPARE/ENRICH. + Britt, S. & Huston, S. (2012). The Role of Money Arguments in Marriage.

All studies referenced are published in peer-reviewed academic sources. The Couples Diary is a tool built on their findings; it is not a substitute for psychotherapy.

Philosophy

A book you don't read. A book you do.

Most relationship books get read over two evenings and put back on the shelf. The knowledge stays on the page - and life goes on exactly as before.

The Couples Diary works differently. It translates the science of closeness - Gottman, Aron, Pennebaker - into a daily, ten-minute ritual you do together. No academic jargon. No coaching promises. Ninety days of concrete practice you can actually sustain.

Because the hero of these 90 days isn't this book - it's you. The book is only a tool: it holds the structure, offers the question, keeps the rhythm. The real work - you do that yourselves. It's not about knowing more about your relationship. It's about living it differently.

Published by Threads Books - an independent press. Deliberately no names, no faces.

We let the book speak - and the science it stands on.

What changes in 90 days

Day zero. Day ninety.

Day 0

  • You mostly talk about logistics.
  • You don't know your attachment styles.
  • „I love you" is said out of habit, not intention.
  • Conflict means escape or escalation.
  • Shared plans live in your heads, not on paper.

Day 90

  • You have a daily 10-minute ritual that sticks.
  • Each of you knows your own style and your partner's - and what it means.
  • You appreciate each other on purpose, not on autopilot.
  • You have 6 repair paths after a fight - you choose instead of react.
  • Your vision, values, and celebration system are written down. Together.

This isn't a promise to „fix your relationship in 90 days." It's a description of the work you'll do if you go through 90 days of the daily ritual.

First couples, first 90 days

We're looking for the first couples for the first 90 days.

The Couples Diary debuts in 2026. We won't show you invented reviews here - the first real stories will appear once the tester couples complete their 90 days. And if you'd like, one of them could be yours.

Want to be one of the first couples?

You go through the 90 days before everyone else, share your impressions once a month, and your story - if you choose - appears on this page with your names.

  • In 2023 the U.S. Surgeon General declared loneliness a public-health epidemic - about half of U.S. adults report measurable loneliness.
  • Couples therapy in the U.S. runs $100-250 per session - often $400-1,000+ a month.
  • Most „couples journals" are prompt decks. The Couples Diary is a structured, science-based 90-day program - diagnostic, ritual, and compatibility compass in one.

Choose your format

Two ways to start the 90 days.

A single couples-therapy session in the U.S. runs $150-250. The Couples Diary gives you 90 days of guided work - for a fraction of one session.

Honestly

What The Couples Diary does not promise.

It won't save every relationship.

Some relationships are at a point where self-guided work isn't enough. That's when you need a therapist - and a diary can't replace the room.

It won't make sure you never fight.

Gottman's research found 69% of conflicts in long relationships are perpetual. The point isn't to eliminate them - it's how you talk about them. That's what you practice here.

It won't work if you don't both sit down to it.

There's no magic „for her, he'll join later" version. This is a shared tool. If one of you doesn't want to, it isn't the time for this book.

It won't replace the science.

We translate research into practice and cite our sources. If you want to go deeper, every science card links to the original publications.

We promise only one thing: 90 days of daily, science-based practice.

The rest is up to you.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Is this therapy?+

No. The Couples Diary is a tool built on research from relationship psychology (Gottman, Aron, Pennebaker) - but it doesn't replace psychotherapy. If you're in a crisis where self-guided work isn't enough, please see a couples therapist.

What if my partner won't do it?+

It's the most common worry in this category - and the diary is designed around it. The first evening is ten minutes and one deliberately light page: more a date than „working on the relationship." You each write separately first, then read to each other - nobody is put on the spot. „Not the journaling type" is not the same as „doesn't want to."

How much time per day?+

About 10 minutes. The ritual is deliberately short - James Clear's Atomic Habits shows consistency matters more than intensity. Ten minutes a day for 90 days is 15 hours of work on your relationship - more than 12 therapy sessions.

Does it work if our relationship is good?+

Yes - and that's the best time. Most couples only start working on their relationship in a crisis. The Couples Diary is for couples who are aware, not broken. You build closeness while you have the resources to.

Does it work for couples with kids?+

Yes. Ten minutes after the kids are down is realistic. The bank of 90 missions includes missions suited to different life stages, including parents.

Does it work for LGBTQ+ couples?+

Yes. The questions are neutral and don't assume any configuration. The assessment, relationship map, and missions work regardless of orientation or identity.

Does it work for long-distance couples?+

Partly. The daily ritual works over video. Missions designed for shared, in-person experiences are harder - but the Return Pages and communication exercises are fully usable. The Kindle Edition makes sense for LDR.

Kindle or paperback - which is better?+

Paperback: the handwriting ritual is psychologically stronger (an effect seen in Pennebaker's research), and the book stays on your shelf. Kindle: cheaper, instant, and annotatable on a tablet. Our pick for a fill-in workbook: the paperback - that's what it was designed for.

When do I get it after ordering?+

Kindle - instantly, delivered by Amazon. Paperback - standard Amazon shipping (Prime eligible). All fulfillment is handled by Amazon.

Who publishes The Couples Diary?+

The Couples Diary is published by Threads Books - an independent press. Deliberately no names or faces: the book's authority comes from the science it stands on (Gottman, Aron, Pennebaker, Clear) and from whether the 90-day ritual works in practice.

How do I know it works?+

The science it stands on works. Gottman, Aron, Pennebaker - these aren't TikTok names, they're decades of peer-reviewed research. Every card in „The science inside" links to the original publications. The first tester-couple reviews will appear here in 2026.

One last thing

90 days for the couple you want to be.

The Couples Diary isn't for every couple. It's for couples who want to work on their closeness when nothing is forcing them to.

  • 3 tools in one book - attachment test · 90-day ritual · 100 conversations
  • 5 studies at the core - Gottman, Aron, Pennebaker, Clear, PREPARE/ENRICH
  • Less than a single therapy session - Kindle or paperback on Amazon

Ten years from now, you won't remember this year's conversations. Unless you write them down.

Ten minutes a day. Ninety days. A different couple.
